RDS on handguns are behavioural compliant?

 

In short – yes.  Aside from technical reasons, from a behavioral perspective, red dot sights are compliant to some degree with how shooters' vision is likely to respond to the sudden life-threatening threat in short proximity.


As the Sympathetic nervous system is dominant, the accommodation causes the human eye to focus on 'intermediate' distances, as an attempt to pick and focus on a 'predator' who approaches or threatens the person.


As epinephrine (an essential hormone for Flight or fight) is released, a process in the human eye cause the ciliary muscles to relax or contract, which in result will change the contour of the lens as the Zonules causing the lenses to be pulled into an oval like shape, or relax, into a more 'round' shape..


Additional notable changes that are very beneficial - considering how frequent low light engagements are - promotes different actions such as dilation of the pupil for example, to allow more 'light' to enter the eye, resulting in what would be considered as a better overall perception.

The shift from Near body vision to far vision has hormonal reasons and is perhaps an evolutionary by-product. for thousands of years, the human eye wasn't required to shift away from a threat to iron sight; instead, the other way around. Commonly, Humans had to look out to a stalking predator as part of the orientation reflex, or, at the appearance of a human charging from a distance with a sword. If near vision was the way to go, arguably, it would be too late for a hunter or a knight for that matter.


Considering that ‘guns’ are rather a new tool from an evolutionary perspective, the human vision is still hard-wired to serve fight or flight behaviors. This means you are by default hard-wired to perceive your opponent in a way that will significantly diminish sight picture.
